Research interests

Being the head of a team of about 40 members, including 20 senior researchers, my research activity can be divided in two research axis. The first one is focused on the development of cutting-edge fluorescence techniques (quantitative two-photon microscopy combining fluorescence lifetime imaging and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, single molecule spectroscopy, high resolution microscopy such as dSTORM/PALM, STED and AFM/fluorescence microscopy) and innovative environment-sensitive fluorescence probes. The second research axis is focused on the application of these techniques and probes to investigate monitor biomolecular interactions, mainly with viral proteins. I am especially interested in deciphering the molecular mechanisms of the nucleic acid chaperone properties of the HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein, as well as in characterizing the interactions of this protein with other viral proteins and host proteins. Moreover, based on these investigations, we have designed a number of different classes of molecules able to efficiently inhibit the replication of HIV-1. More recently, my research projects have been extended to the characterization of the role of the UHRF1/DNMT1 tandem in the replication of DNA methylation patterns and the changes of membrane structure and dynamics in bacterial membranes and host/bacteria interactions.
